I have been experimenting with Chalk Paint of late. Well, it has not been Annie Sloan Chalk Paint it has been different types so not sure if they can really be called Chalk Paint. However, I am sure you get the idea. I have been offered the Chalk Paint, DIY “recipe” at several big box stores so finally decided to see what it entailed. Wow, was my 1st impression. Very inexpensive.
I have been looking at price points and some chalk paints can be quite expensive. They tend to come in small portions but don’t let that scare you as they go a long way.
Back to the recipe. I was pleased by what is was going to take for me to create some of the “recipe”.
- I cup of latex paint
- 1/3 cup plaster of paris
- 1/3 cup water.
I decided to browse the mistints to see how low I could get the total cost down to. I found a lovely taupe/grey quart on sale for $11, plaster of paris was $6, water, free.
Today, I followed the Chalk Paint recipe and created my 1st DIY Chalk paint. The instructions state that you simply mix the 3 ingredients together and bam, you have enough paint to cover a 6 drawer dresser. I was not creating the paint to paint furniture but at this point it was too late. I used about 1/10 of a can of paint so lets say $1.10, barely put a dent in the plaster of paris so, $0.25. I had my $1.35 worth of paint and was ready to roll.
I chose this old window that I am planning to refit with coloured glass and this pine box that I am hoping to make into a small wine rack. Both items took me about 15 minutes to paint with a cheap brush. I wasn’t looking for full coverage as I want them both to look rustic. I could still opt to add more wear with a light sand but I think I am happy the way they are.
I also purchased another mistint tester in a nice bright pink. It was priced at $2.39 so I think I used about $.15 worth and painted a Mason Jar just to see the results.
Sorry Chalk Paint retailers but I think I have found a product that is easy to make in any colour I choose and crazy inexpensive. For those who are not into mixing their own, there are several other great options out there that I will share in a future post.
